THE CANOE by Paulo Freire
In a long river, difficult to cross, there was a boatman who took people from one side to the other. On one of the trips, there was a lawyer and a teacher.
As someone who likes to talk a
lot, the lawyer asked the boatman:
- My friend, do you understand laws?
–No ! The boatman replied.
And the distressed lawyer:
- What a pity, you have lost half
your life.
The teacher, very sociable, entered the conversation: -
Mr. boatman, do you know how to read and write? –
Neither, replied the boatman
–What a pity! Lamented the
teacher.
–You lost half your life!
–Then a wave came so strong that it turned the
canoe.
- The worried boatman asked:
- Do you guys know how to swim?
- No ! They responded quickly.
- What a shame the boatman
concluded.
- You lost your whole life.
