Recreation of the first Landing.
of the Welsh in Chubut.
Argentines called themselves "sons of the ships" because most of them are descendants of immigrants that came from Europe by ship.
Argentina received millions of immigrants between the XIX and the mid of the XX centuries who were escaping from wars and poverty from European countries like : Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Switzerland, Scandinavian countries, Wales. Here goes the story of the first Welsh immigrants in Argentina.
The story of the Welsh settlers who chose
Argentina to be free.
In 1865, a group of intrepid Welsh settlers headed to
Patagonia in Argentina. Over 150 Welsh people sailed from Liverpool to
establish a Welsh settlement in the lands of the Chubut
Valley inspired by the minister Michael D Jones, a man of strong
religious and political convictions who encouraged them to keep their
language and customs alive threatened by the British government.
On July 28, 1865, the Welsh reached the River Chubut aboard the clipper Mimosa. They settled in the lands granted by
the Argentine government and called the settlement ‘Y Wladfa’, "the Colony ".
The Welsh settlers did not have it easy in their first
years in the Chubut valley, Argentine Patagonia. At first, they had to
survive in caves, living from fishing and hunting. They were
helped by the Tehuelches, a native tribe, that taught them abilities to
survive the hostile environment.
The Welsh tried to practice agriculture in the valley but their first two harvests failed. Then, they found a way to divert the waters of the Chubut River via irrigation channels to grow food, this was one of the keys why the settlers could survive the hostile environment. The irrigation method that the welsh created is one of the most important legacies of this community to Argentina. It was copied in other parts of Patagonia making farming possible and helping the region to prosper.
In Chubut, the Welsh community also inherited the
building of many towns which they built with the Welsh style
architecture like:
Trevelin,“Mill-Town” in Welsh, owes its name
to John Daniel Evans, who established the mill, recently turned into an airy,
modern museum.
Trelew, “Tre” in Welsh means town, and “Lew”
is short for Lewis, so Trelew is Lewis Town or, as the local museum has it in
its title, the “Pueblo de Luís”.
Dolavon, Meadow by the river in Welsh, from
the words dôl Meadow and afon river.
The Argentine - Welsh flag.
Despite the very difficult start, by the end
of the 19th century the Welsh settlement in Chubut was experiencing a
golden age, both economically and culturally especially in the cities of Rawson, Trelew, Trevelin, Gaiman, Porth Madryn and Dolavon.
The descendants of the original Welsh settlers have
kept the Welsh language and traditions alive in Chubut till nowadays, becoming since then a very important tourist attraction of Patagonia.
The proud community survives to this day serving the
Welsh cake, an Argentine - Welsh creation, in Welsh tea houses, and
celebrating their heritage at the Eisteddfod Festival and the First
Landing Festival.
The
crowning of the bard
in the Eisteddfod Festival
in Chubut.
The Eisteddfod festival was born in the city of Rawson in 1865 and since then it has been developed in Trevelin, Dolavon, Trelew and Gaiman by a group of people supported by the local municipalities and the Ministry of Culture of the Province of Chubut.
Eisteddfodau means "to be sit" in Welsh is a typical
Welsh cultural festival whose earliest records date back to 1717 in Aberteifi in central-west Wales. The festival's name refers to a tradition of the ancient Celts, as they gathered and listened respectfully to the Druids and poets who recited their poems.
The Eisteddfod Festival has a large number of
competitions that include different cultural activities: singing, ensembles, soloists, recitation, dance, literature, photography and more. But without a doubt one of the most important events is the coronation of the Bard (winning poet in Welsh). This activity is performed as the Eisteddfod ends when each of the poets sits in their bardic chair, made of wood typical of the area, to
crown the winners in the Welsh and Castilian language.
The Festival of the First Landing of the Welsh settlers in Chubut, the celebration of "Gŵyl y Glaniad ", is held every 28th of july. It starts with a Welsh tea party in the afternoon and a concert in the evening in the chapels of the cities of Welsh origin like Rawson, Trelew, Gaiman, Trevelin, Porth Madryn and Dolavon. The end of the festival closes with a recreation of the landing of the first Welsh settlers in Chubut. And the Welsh hymn Calon Lân is sung in Welsh and Spanish, followed by the national anthems of Wales and Argentina. Finally, the organizers of the Festival lay flowers on the grave of the settlement leader Lewis Jones, after whom the town of Trelew is named.
The Welsh and their descendants have contributed a lot to the development of the Argentinian region of Patagonia . The Welsh culture in Patagonia has survived into the twenty-first century despite the various adversities that the settlement faced from their arrival in 1865.
Their legacy is represented in the names and architecture of towns, the irrigation method they brought that made farming possible in Chubut, their language and culture that is still alive and the lesson of courage and bravery of the Welsh settlers who survived in an adverse environment.
The Welsh settlement in Chubut is unique. It has been successful in keeping alive their culture and language unlike the other settlements by the Welsh in USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand where the Welsh language was lost. Curiously, when the Welsh citizens in Great Britain wanted to recover their language they brought teachers from Argentina.
The Welsh and their descendants have become Argentines, without losing their Celtic roots. And they were able to prove it during the year 1902 when Argentina and Chile had a conflict for the Valley 16 de Octubre: when asked for their preferences, the Welsh said: “We have lived under the protection and sovereignty of Argentina; we are loyal to this land, native to many of us”.
To represent their legacy the Welsh in Chubut have a quote“Glaniasant yma y aros ac i fod yn rhydd” which means "The Welsh landed in Chubut to stay and TO BE FREE".

The Welsh cake "bara brith" ( from the Welsh words Bara : bread and Brith :speckled) despite its name, did not come from Wales. Actually, it represents a sign of the strength of the first Welsh settlers who arrived in the Valley of the Chubut River in Argentina and how they faced the difficulties the environment presented.
On July 28, 1865 a hundred and fifty three Welsh people reached the coasts of the Chubut River aboard the Mimosa clipper. These men and women came sailing from Wales.
The Welsh cake " Bara brith "
They wanted to escape from the British government harassment and to keep their traditions, culture and religion. The Argentinian government wanted
to populate and to defend their large territory that was occupied by Indians and threatened by foreign invaders.
It was not easy for the pioneers. They had to face among many things, the lack of drinking water and the shortage of food. While men traveled the surrounding areas looking for a place with drinkable water and shelter for the winds and the possible attacks, women tried to get by with the little food they had and to make them last.
The Welsh cake "Bara brith "
This was how a group of families gathered and mixed all the ingredients they had at hand: flour, brown sugar, nuts, sweetened fruits, honey and other ingredients. The result was a cake that had two fundamental characteristics: a high caloric value and it lasted for a long time.
When the bad times were through and the Welsh settlers could finally feel at home in Chubut , they added an extra tradition : the creation of the famous Welsh cake which is still served today in the Welsh teahouses in Chubut.
Each family has its own recipe and their secret ingredient to give it a special flavor. Apart from that, there is an established recipe in which the most important ingredients are the care and the time you devote to each ingredient. It is said that preparing a good Welsh cake takes 45 hours!
A beautiful tradition linked to Welsh cake that newlyweds follow in Chubut: when they prepare the wedding cake, the bottom is a Welsh cake. The day of the party they eat the whole cake except for that part, which is carefully wrapped and kept in a can. The couple will eat a slice of it every month during the first year as a symbol of overcoming difficulties.
Recipe of the Welsh cake:
Ingredients:
Yield: 4-6 guests
* 1 and 1/2 cup brown sugar.
* 8 oz. butter.
* 1 tablespoon lemon zest.
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
* 4 eggs.
* 2 and 1/2 cups flour.
* 2 teaspoons baking powder.
* 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon.
* 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg.
* 1/2 cup raisins.
* 1 cup candied fruit.
* 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
* 1 cup Cognac or Brandy.
* 2 tablespoons molasses.
* 3/4 cup water.
1) First we let the dried fruit macerate overnight in the cognac; the next day reserve fruits and cognac separately.
2) Beat the melted butter with the sugar until creamy, then add the lemon zest and the vanilla.
3) The cup of sugar is to be turned into a syrup; over medium heat , pour the sugar in a pan, gradually adding the water while keeping it boiling during the whole process; heat this up and cook to reduce; remove from the stove and let it cool down.
4) Once cooled, add the syrup to the butter preparation and whisk well. Add the eggs, one by one while whisking then add the cognac and the molasses.
5) Preheat the oven to 350 °F, grill placed at middle position in the oven. Mix the flour with the baking powder, add the spices then add to the butter and eggs mixture. We now add the candied fruits that are macerated in the cognac.
6) Pour the cake preparation in a greased cake pan, and bake in the oven for at least one hour before checking it.
It is recommended to put some sugar icing on the cake, then nuts to make the presentation spectacular...
