Mafalda is a beloved character of an Argentine comic strip of the same name. It is the creation of “Quino“Joaquín Lavado. Quino created Mafalda to criticize the dictatorship and avoid the rigid censorship during the '60s and '70s.

The main character is MAFALDA
, an Argentine girl around five or six years old who is very smart with strong political views.

Mafalda challenges people to think, reexamine their values and stereotypes ,questions their vision of society with the use of irony, creativity and intelligence.

She is a fan of The Beatles, and very concerned about war, poverty, and the state of humanity and the world, and is often reading the newspaper, listening to the news on her radio, or consulting her globe.

She lives with her family:
Her father works for an insurance company, loves plants, and sympathizes with Mafalda's world view and her mother, a housewife, who is dedicated to her family and Mafalda's questions put her to think
.

And also, Guille, her baby brother. He loves soup and is a fan of Bridgett Bardot. He shares a pet with his sister Mafalda, a turtle called "bureaucracy."  Guille is a rebellious boy, very opinionated and straightforward. He represents the hippie generation and he makes every once in a while the Peace and Love symbol.

Also, she is   surrounded by her friends:

Felipe, a dreamy boy with huge insecurity problems and huge teeth. He is about a year older than Mafalda. He is shy, nervous, bright, and loves reading comic books, especially those from “El llanero solitario” (The lone ranger).

Manolito, a shopkeeper's son obsessed with money and business. His father (who comes from Spain) owns a little store, and he (Manolito) is very involved in that.

Miguelito, is the youngest of the gang, somewhat of a rebel with a heart of gold, who gets into philosophical debates. He is known for his lettuce shaped hair. He is the son of Italian parents.

Susanita, a gossipy and frivolous girl. She is the opposite of Mafalda and her only interest in life is getting married with a rich man and becoming a housewife.

Libertad is a very short girl, she jokes with her name (Libertad means “Freedom” in English). The daughter of left-wing parents, her mother works as a French translator.
Sometimes she gets in trouble because of her very strong political points of view and also because she tells what she thinks.

With a combination of a rich sense of humor and sharp social commentary, Quino used the characters of the comic strip to question values, ideals and stereotypes of society and challenge people to think.
