SUPERLATIVES
(explicados en español )(explained in Spanish )

VOLTAIRE.

Los superlativos se forman a partir de adjetivos , que describen el grado de mayor o menor cualidad de un adjetivo. Generalmente , el adjetivo en grado superlativo va precedido por la palabra "The".

Cuando el adjetivo tiene 1 sílaba agregamos EST

Ejemplos

ADJETIVO              SUPERLATIVO
Old (antiguo)          the Oldest
Long (largo) the Longest
Cheap (barato)       the Cheapest
High (alto)   the Hightest

The Paraná is the longest river in Argentina.
El Paraná es el río más largo de Argentina.

The church is very old . It is the oldest building in town.
La iglesia es muy antigua. Es el edificio más antiguo de la ciudad.

The Aconcagua is the highest mountain in Argentina.
El Aconcagua es la montaña más alta en Argentina.

EXCEPCIONES
Cuando el adjetivo termina en E , se omite y se agrega ST

Ejemplo :

ADJETIVO        SUPERLATIVO
Nice                    the NICEST

This dress is the nicest I have .
Este vestido es el más lindo que tengo.

Cuando el adjetivo termina en una vocal + una consonante, se dobla la consonante.
Ejemplos:

BIG (grande)          the Biggest
Hot (caluroso)       the Hottest
Fat (gordo)             the Fattest
Sad (triste)             the Saddest
Thin (delgado)    the Thinnest

The whale is the biggest animal in the sea.
La ballena es el animal más grande del mar.

The province of Misiones is the hottest in Argentina.
La provincia de Misiones es la más calurosa de Argentina.

Cuando el adjetivo tiene dos sílabas y termina en Y, se cambia la Y por i
y se agrega EST

Easy ( facil)                  the Easiest
Happy (feliz)               the Happiest
Heavy (pesado)       the Heaviest
Friendly (amigable)    the Friendliest

Dolphins are the friendliest animals.
Los delfines son los animales más amigables.

This exercise is the easiest.
Este ejercicio es el mas fácil.

The suitcase is the heaviest.
La valija es la más pesada.

Cuando el adjetivo tiene dos sílabas o más, ponemos la palabra MOST= el más.

Ejemplos:

Formal                 the MOST formal

Difficult               the MOST difficult
(dificil)

Expensive   the MOST expensive
(caro)

Interesting            the MOST interesting
(interesante)

Comfortable         the MOST comfortable

Buenos Aires is the most expensive city in Argentina.
Buenos Aires es la ciudad más costosa en Argentina.

Albert is the most interesting person I have ever met.
Albert es la persona más interesante que Yo he conocido.

EXCEPCIONES

En el caso de algunos adjetivos el superlativo no sigue la regla anterior.
Se cambia la palabra.

Bad (malo)           the WORST

Anne is the best tennis player in the club.
Ana es la mejor jugadora de tenis del club.

In my personal opinion , Jorge Luis Borges is the best Argentinian writer.

En mi opinión personal , Jorge Luis Borges es el mejor escritor Argentino.
